Do your research before you commit
Review the listing closely, request additional photos and video from angles that aren't shown, and ask the seller direct questions about the vehicle's history, condition, and any known issues. A seller willing to answer detailed questions and provide extra documentation is generally a good sign; reluctance to do either is worth taking seriously before you send any money.
Arrange a pre-purchase inspection
A third-party, independent mechanic inspection near the vehicle's location is one of the most valuable steps you can take when buying remotely, since it gives you an objective assessment you can't get from photos alone. Many mobile inspection services operate nationally and can visit a dealer or private seller's location on your behalf; look for one independent of the seller so the report is unbiased.
Understand payment and title timing
Work out exactly how and when payment happens relative to when you receive the title or have it transferred, since remote purchases carry more risk of miscommunication on this point than an in-person deal. Using a reputable, traceable payment method and confirming the sequence of steps in writing with the seller protects both sides and reduces the chance of a dispute later.
Verify the vehicle's paperwork
Request a copy of the title and confirm the seller's name matches it, check for a lien that needs to be released, and consider running a vehicle history report using the VIN. If you're financing the purchase, coordinate with your lender early about how they handle a remote, out-of-state purchase, since some lenders have specific requirements.
Plan pickup from a dealership
Dealerships are generally used to arranging third-party pickup and can coordinate a specific time window and point of contact for a transport driver. Confirm with the dealer ahead of time that they're aware a carrier will be arriving, and provide your coordinator with the dealership's hours and any special instructions for access.
Plan pickup from a private seller
With a private seller, confirm the exact address, availability, and whether the location can accommodate a larger transport truck, since residential streets sometimes require meeting at a nearby, more accessible spot. Make sure the seller knows a driver, not you, will be arriving and understands the walk-around inspection and paperwork will happen at that time.
Photograph the vehicle before it's loaded
Ask the seller or dealer to send timestamped photos immediately before pickup as an extra layer of documentation, in addition to whatever inspection the carrier's driver completes. This is especially useful for a purchase you haven't seen in person, since it fills the gap between your last review of listing photos and the vehicle's actual condition at the moment of pickup.
