During Your Shipment
What Car Shipping Status Updates Actually Look Like
It's natural to want to know where your car is once it's on a truck, but auto transport doesn't work like tracking a package with a live map. Updates come from people, not a GPS dot on a screen, and knowing what to realistically expect makes the process less stressful. Here's how communication typically works from booking through delivery.

Updates come from your coordinator, not a live map
Your coordinator is your main point of contact from booking through delivery, and they can tell you when your vehicle is dispatched, which carrier has been assigned, and the general status of the shipment based on what the carrier has reported. This is a person-to-person process built on check-ins rather than an automated live feed, so response times depend on when the coordinator has current information to share, not on a constantly refreshing dashboard.
The driver is your other point of contact
Once a carrier is dispatched, you'll typically receive the driver's contact information, and the driver may call or text as they get closer to your pickup or delivery window. Drivers are on the road managing multiple stops and hours-of-service rules, so their availability to answer calls varies, and updates from them tend to be practical and brief: confirming a rough arrival window rather than a precise time.
Why continuous GPS tracking usually isn't available
Unlike a parcel carrier scanning a package at each stop, most independent auto transport carriers do not offer a public, real-time GPS tracking link for individual vehicles. Some carriers may share general location information if asked, but it isn't standard across the industry, and we don't promise live tracking as part of a shipment. If knowing the truck's exact location matters a great deal to your planning, ask your coordinator what, if anything, the assigned carrier can share.
Pickup confirmation: what actually happens
When the driver arrives, they'll conduct a walk-around inspection with you (or your authorized representative), document the vehicle's condition on the bill of lading, and confirm the load is complete. Your coordinator is generally notified once pickup is complete, and that's usually when you'll get a clear confirmation that your vehicle is officially en route.
Delivery confirmation: what to expect
As the truck nears your delivery location, the driver typically calls to give a window for arrival, which can shift based on traffic, weather, or other stops on the route. At delivery, another walk-around inspection is completed and compared against the pickup record before you sign off. This signature is your confirmation that the shipment is complete.
How to ask for a status update without the runaround
If you haven't heard anything in a while, reach out to your coordinator directly with your order number and specific question, such as whether the carrier has been assigned or dispatched. Being specific gets a faster, more useful answer than a general "how's it going" message, since your coordinator can check with the carrier and get back to you with real information rather than a guess.
Setting realistic expectations from the start
Knowing upfront that updates come in the form of periodic check-ins rather than a live tracking screen helps you plan around realistic windows instead of waiting on notifications that aren't part of how this industry typically operates. If timing is critical, especially near delivery, build in some flexibility and stay reachable by phone during your expected window.
