EV transport
Ship an electric vehicle with the right equipment and prep
Electric vehicles bring a few real differences to transport planning compared with gas vehicles, mostly around weight, clearance and how the vehicle can be moved without being driven under its own power. Velocity Auto Transport coordinates EV shipments by matching your vehicle's specifics to a carrier and equipment that can handle them appropriately.

What electric vehicle shipping involves
Charge level before pickup
A moderate charge level, generally enough to allow the vehicle to be driven onto and positioned on the trailer, is usually sufficient — a full charge is not required and isn't recommended for extended sitting on a trailer either. Coordinate with your carrier if you have questions specific to your vehicle's charge behavior over the length of your route.
Weight and low clearance
EVs are often heavier than comparable gas vehicles due to battery packs, which is a factor in how a carrier loads and distributes weight across a multi-car trailer. Many EVs also have particularly low ground clearance, which increases the risk of scraping on ramps or inclines, so a carrier experienced with the specific model can be a meaningful advantage.
Tow and neutral limitations on some EVs
Not all EVs can be safely put in neutral or towed the same way a traditional vehicle can, and some manufacturers specify particular procedures or restrictions for moving their vehicles without engaging the drivetrain normally. Note your vehicle's make and model clearly when requesting a quote so the assigned driver can follow the correct procedure at loading.
Open vs. enclosed transport for EVs
Open transport is widely available and suitable for most EV shipments. Enclosed transport is worth considering for vehicles you want extra protected from weather and road debris, though as with any vehicle it generally requires more lead time and a smaller pool of available carriers.
Battery condition disclosures
If the vehicle has any battery damage, has been in an incident involving the battery pack, or is subject to a fire-related recall, disclose that specifically when requesting a quote. Acceptance of a vehicle with a damaged or fire-recall battery is evaluated case by case by the carrier and is never automatic, since it affects what equipment and precautions are appropriate.
Preparing an EV for transport
Beyond charge level, remove personal items, note any aftermarket modifications like lowered suspension that could worsen clearance issues, and make sure charging cables or accessories you want shipped with the vehicle are secured inside rather than loose.
The brokerage's role for EV shipments
Velocity matches your EV's specific requirements — weight, clearance, drivetrain handling and any battery condition — to a carrier equipped and informed to handle them appropriately. Accurate details up front reduce the chance of a mismatched truck showing up on pickup day.

Plan around this
What affects your shipment
Limitations and requirements worth knowing before you book this service.
- Moderate charge is enough: A partial charge sufficient to load and position the vehicle is typically all that's needed.
- Clearance matters at loading: Low-clearance EVs need a carrier experienced with ramp angles for that model.
- Disclose drivetrain quirks: Some EVs have specific neutral or tow limitations the driver needs to know in advance.
- Battery damage is case-specific: A damaged or fire-recall battery is evaluated individually and isn't automatically accepted for standard transport.
- Secure loose accessories: Keep charging cables and other loose items secured inside rather than in the trunk unsecured.
