Maine is at the end of the line, not along it

Unlike states that sit on a major cross-country interstate, most of Maine is served by carriers making a dedicated run up or down I-95, rather than picking up incidentally along a longer route. Portland, Biddeford and the southern Maine coast are the closest thing the state has to a high-traffic corridor, since I-95 and I-295 connect them to Boston and the rest of the Northeast. Vehicles in this area typically get matched to a carrier faster than those farther Down East or inland.

Winter weather is a real scheduling factor

Maine winters bring heavy snow, ice storms and, in the northern half of the state, extended stretches of sub-freezing temperatures that can slow highway travel. Carriers adjust routing and timing around major storms, and a shipment scheduled during or right after a significant nor'easter should expect some flexibility on pickup or delivery timing.

Rural and Down East access

Much of Down East Maine and the interior is made up of small towns connected by two-lane roads, some without much shoulder for a large carrier to maneuver. For addresses off the main routes, meeting a driver at a wider road, a town center or a commercial lot is often simpler than trying to bring the truck to a narrow residential street.

Maine's coastal and lake communities see a wave of seasonal vehicle movement each spring and fall as summer residents arrive and depart, alongside year-round relocation tied to jobs in Portland's healthcare and services sector. Booking ahead of the late-spring rush, when many seasonal moves cluster together, generally gives more scheduling flexibility.

Open transport works for nearly all Maine shipments

Open carriers handle the overwhelming majority of vehicles moving in and out of Maine, and equipment availability on the I-95 corridor supports that well.
