Full-size carriers need room to stop and load legally. Where a street in Long Island is narrow, gated or restricted, the driver arranges a safe spot close by — a wide cross street or a large lot.

Shipping a vehicle in and out of Long Island
One region, two very different halves
Nassau County closer to the city is densely suburban with shorter distances between towns, while eastern Suffolk County stretches out into farmland, vineyards, and beach communities that see heavy seasonal traffic in summer. A carrier serving a Levittown pickup and one serving a Montauk delivery are working with very different road conditions and distances, and Velocity accounts for that when matching a driver to your shipment.
Parkway restrictions carriers have to work around
The Northern State and Southern State Parkways, along with the Meadowbrook and Wantagh Parkways, have famously low overpass clearances that were designed decades before car carriers existed and that trucks simply cannot use. Carriers instead route through the Long Island Expressway (I-495) or local surface roads, which is worth knowing if a delivery address sits just off a parkway exit — the truck will approach from a different direction than your GPS might suggest.
Hamptons and North Fork seasonal swings
Summer brings a significant influx of seasonal residents and vehicles to the East End, with the Hamptons and North Fork seeing heavier local traffic on two-lane roads like Route 27 and Route 25. Shipments timed around Memorial Day or Labor Day weekends benefit from earlier booking, since local congestion and higher demand for carriers both increase during those stretches.
The Long Island Expressway as the main artery
The LIE (I-495) runs the length of the island and is the backbone route most carriers use to reach towns from Queens all the way to Riverhead. It's also known for heavy congestion, particularly near exits into Nassau County during commuting hours, so carriers familiar with the island tend to plan pickups outside the worst traffic windows when possible.
Suburban driveways versus older village streets
Much of Nassau County and western Suffolk has suburban driveways wide enough for a direct pickup, which is more workable than the tighter streets found in older village centers like Northport, Sag Harbor, or Cold Spring Harbor. In those historic downtown areas, a nearby municipal lot or a wider road is often the simpler meeting point.
Ferry connections for the North Fork and beyond
The Cross Sound Ferry and the Port Jefferson–Bridgeport ferry connect parts of Long Island to Connecticut, and some shipments heading toward New England route through these crossings rather than back through the city. If your shipment involves this kind of routing, it's worth flagging when you book so scheduling accounts for ferry timetables.
Preparing your vehicle for pickup
Clear out personal items, record the fuel level, and photograph the vehicle from all sides before loading. On delivery, walk around the car with the driver and compare it to your photos before signing off. This matters across the island, whether the pickup happens in a Nassau County driveway or a Suffolk County lot near the beach.
